Gran Canaria Airport: Car Rental (No Deposit, No Credit Card Required) [GUIDE]

Gran Canaria is one of the most fascinating islands in the Canary archipelago. Here, you'll find sandy beaches, the Maspalomas dunes, mountainous landscapes, picturesque towns, and viewpoints that aren't always easily accessible by public transport. Renting a car at Gran Canaria Airport (LPA) allows you to start exploring almost immediately upon arrival and explore the island at your own pace, from Las Palmas and Puerto de Mogán to the mountain roads leading to Roque Nublo.

In this guide, I'll show you how to find a car rental at Gran Canaria Airport, compare available offers, and choose the right car for your needs. I also explain how to find rentals without a deposit or credit card, and what to look for in the deposit, insurance, and pick-up policies. This will help you avoid unnecessary costs and surprises when picking up your car.

If questions and doubts arise during the search, look for answers further in the text. The text is long and contains a lot of useful information. I divided it into several logical parts and included links to them at the end of the post. I consciously constructed it this way. Zanim ruszysz samochodem po Gran Canarii

Ruch prawostronny

Górskie drogi i serpentyny
W centralnej części Gran Canarii, szczególnie w okolicach Tejedy, Artenary i Roque Nublo, spotkasz wąskie drogi, ostre zakręty oraz strome podjazdy i zjazdy. Zachowaj ostrożność podczas mijania autokarów i większych samochodów.

Paliwo i stacje benzynowe
Stacje benzynowe bez problemu znajdziesz w pobliżu większych miejscowości i głównych dróg. W górzystym interiorze wyspy jest ich znacznie mniej, dlatego przed dłuższą wycieczką warto zatankować samochód. Pamiętaj, że gasolina oznacza benzynę, a gasóleo oznacza olej napędowy.

Alcohol while driving
W Hiszpanii dopuszczalny limit alkoholu we krwi wynosi 0,5‰ (0,25 mg/l w wydychanym powietrzu). Dla początkujących i zawodowych kierowców obowiązuje niższy limit 0,3‰. Najbezpieczniejszym rozwiązaniem jest całkowita rezygnacja z alkoholu przed prowadzeniem samochodu.

Prawo jazdy i wyposażenie samochodu

Material liability, insurance, own contribution, deposits and deposits

When the rental company hands over the car to you, you are also responsible for its condition for the duration of the rental. It's clear!
What is the scope of this responsibility? It's not so clear anymore!

Financial responsibility is mandatory, but can it be significantly reduced? Or maybe you can throw it away completely?
It's possible, but you have to see how!
You can find more about getting rid of financial responsibility for a rented car in the entry: Car rental insurance and reduction of financial liability - [click]

Additional charges and their reasons

Additional fees incurred when renting a car (especially those charged after the car is returned) are often a source of frustration for many rental customers. They can be prevented, but first you need to know where such fees come from and what may be their cause. I gathered situations I knew together in one text and described them. It's really worth reading this post!

Gran Canaria by car – a 7-day itinerary full of amazing views

Gran Canaria is brimming with wonderful diversity. From golden dunes and seaside resorts, through picturesque mountain roads, to traditional towns and the rugged Atlantic coast. A rental car allows you to discover its most interesting corners at your own pace, without having to change hotels every day.

I've prepared a 7-day itinerary starting and ending at Gran Canaria Airport. It's perfect for inspiration before a full guide to the island appears on the blog. The itinerary includes picking up a car at the airport, six nights at a single base in the south of the island, and daily excursions to various parts of Gran Canaria.

Day 1 – Arrival, car pick-up and Maspalomas Dunes

Upon arrival, collect your rental car at Gran Canaria Airport and head towards Maspalomas. The drive will take approximately 25-35 minutes. After checking in at your hotel, take a walk along the famous Maspalomas Dunes. They're one of the island's most iconic landscapes. The vast sandhills resemble a small desert right by the ocean.

It is also worth seeing the Faro de Maspalomas lighthouse and relaxing on the nearby beach.

Distance: approx. 35 km
Driving time: 25–35 min
Suggested accommodation: Maspalomas or Playa del Inglés.

Day 2 – Puerto de Mogán and the southwest coast

Spend your second day exploring the southwest coast. Head to Puerto de Mogán, often called Little Venice. The town is charming with its colorful houses, flowers, narrow streets, and small fishing port. It's a great place for a leisurely stroll, coffee, or lunch overlooking the ocean.

You can also relax on the local beach and enjoy the quieter atmosphere of this part of the island.

Distance: approx. 50 km
Driving time: 45–55 min
Suggested accommodation: Maspalomas or Playa del Inglés.

Day 3 – Mountain landscapes, Roque Nublo and Tejeda

This day, head deeper into the island, where completely different landscapes await. Your main destination will be Roque Nublo, a distinctive rock formation rising to an altitude of approximately 1813 meters above sea level. Reaching the viewpoint requires a short hike, but the panoramic views of the mountains and surrounding valleys are definitely worth the effort.

Next, visit Tejeda, one of the most beautifully situated towns in Gran Canaria. Stop for a stroll through the center and admire the mountain views.

Distance: approx. 102 km
Driving time: 2 hours 25–45 minutes
Suggested accommodation: Maspalomas or Playa del Inglés.

Day 4 – Las Palmas and the historic district of Vegueta

Spend your fourth day exploring Las Palmas, Gran Canaria's largest city. Start in the historic Vegueta district, where you'll find cobblestone streets, historic buildings, and the Santa Ana Cathedral. It's a great place to experience a different, urban side of the island.

Later, head to Las Canteras Beach, one of the most famous urban beaches in the Canary Islands. Here, you can relax, stroll along the promenade, or dine at one of the seaside restaurants.

Distance: approx. 115 km
Driving time: 1 hour 30 minutes–1 hour 45 minutes
Suggested accommodation: Maspalomas or Playa del Inglés.

Day 5 – Teror and Arucas, traditional Gran Canaria

This time, head north to see two charming towns. Your first stop will be Teror, known for its colorful facades and distinctive wooden balconies. Stroll through the historic center and see the Basilica of Our Lady of Pino.

Next, visit Arucas, whose most recognizable landmark is the impressive Iglesia de San Juan Bautista church. If you're interested in local rum production, you might also consider visiting the Arehucas Distillery.

Distance: approx. 153 km
Driving time: approx. 2 hours 10 minutes
Suggested accommodation: Maspalomas or Playa del Inglés.

Day 6 – Agaete, Puerto de las Nieves and natural pools

Spend the last full day of your trip exploring the northwest coast. Visit Agaete and the oceanfront port of Puerto de las Nieves. This peaceful town offers beautiful views of the rocky coast and mountains.

The natural pools of Las Salinas, formed among the coastal rocks, are also worth a visit. If the ocean conditions are suitable, you can enjoy a swim in the natural pools.

After exploring, return to your hotel in the south of the island.

Distance: approx. 184 km
Driving time: approx. 2 hours 40 minutes
Suggested accommodation: Maspalomas or Playa del Inglés.

Day 7 – Return to the airport and end of the trip

On your final day, depart from your hotel in Maspalomas for Gran Canaria Airport. The drive will take approximately 25-35 minutes. Before returning the car, fill up with fuel according to the rental company's terms and conditions and return the car to the designated drop-off point.

Distance: approx. 35 km
Driving time: 25–35 min.

7 days, one hotel and hundreds of kilometers of beautiful landscapes – this is the most convenient way to discover Gran Canaria!

Tip : Plan on staying six nights in Maspalomas or Playa del Inglés. The distances and travel times provided are approximate and are based on driving alone, without stops for sightseeing. Mountain roads can take longer, so it's worth leaving some extra time.
