Narration
White as marble, huge as pride – this structure seems to grow straight from the skeleton of Rome itself. But not everyone loves it. Locals refer to it ironically as “the typewriter” or “the wedding cake”.
Puzzle
What is the Altar of the Homeland?
(You'll find the correct answer at the bottom of this page, but don't look there right away. Try to answer the riddle yourself first. That's the fun of it!)
Prize
The reward for solving the puzzle is the fourth seal: The Seal of Union – a symbol of change. Keep it as proof of solving the fourth task!

Interesting facts (not) only serious
In the heart of Rome, between the ruins of the Empire and the crowds of tourists with ice cream, stands something… big. Very big. It is the Altar of the Fatherland, a monument that was supposed to commemorate the unification of Italy, but which also happened to be the largest white object within a radius of several kilometers.
Built of marble, it gleams in the sun like freshly polished porcelain and has divided Romans for years. Some love it, others call it a “typewriter” or a “wedding cake on steroids.” One thing is for sure – it is impossible not to notice.
The monument to the king that no one has seen
Victor Emmanuel II was the first king of a united Italy. Most Italians know his monument, but few remember his face. No wonder – the equestrian statue on the front of the monument is so large that the horse itself could fit a studio apartment in its belly.
Tomb of the Unknown Soldier
At the very center of the monument is the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, a symbol of those who gave their lives for their country but were never recognized. State ceremonies are held here every year, and the eternal flame reminds us that freedom has its price.
A monument made of marble… and controversy
The Romans still argue about whether this monument is beautiful or just very, very white. Only the pigeons seem happy – they have a great vantage point and plenty of flat surfaces to… relax.
Stairs that test your fitness
Climbing the terraces of the monument, you can feel like a true patriot. Or like a tourist out of breath. But it's worth it, because the view of Rome is breathtaking (or maybe it's just the lack of oxygen after so many stairs).
***
Not every seal has to be a secret. Sometimes it is a sign of hope, memory and a new beginning. The Altar of the Homeland is just like that – controversial, monumental, but full of meaning.
