Rome - weather, climate and annual temperatures
If you tried to characterize an item in one short sentence: Rome is a good place to go all year round. Especially for us inhabitants of the temperate climate.
Suffice it to say that the average annual temperature in Rome is ... 21 degrees !!! Yes Yes! This is not a mistake. Exactly 21 degrees.
Of course, there are months worse and better, but generally the weather is favorable to visiting Rome throughout the year.
The annual course of changes in air temperature during the day and at night, the number of rainy days and the amount of rainfall can be seen in the graph below. These data were also collected in the form of a table below the graph.
Temperature | Amount | Number of days | ||
---|---|---|---|---|
during the day [℃] | in the night [℃] | rainfall [Mm] | rain | |
January | 15 | 9 | 16 | 8 |
February | 16 | 8 | 15 | 10 |
March | 17 | 10 | 15 | 8 |
April | 18 | 11 | 16 | 2 |
May | 23 | 15 | 18 | 3 |
June | 27 | 18 | 22 | 2 |
July | 29 | 21 | 24 | 2 |
August | 30 | 22 | 25 | 1 |
September | 27 | 20 | 24 | 6 |
October | 23 | 17 | 21 | 6 |
November | 20 | 13 | 18 | 11 |
December | 16 | 11 | 17 | 5 |
Going deeper into the details, the weather in Rome can be easily divided into two time intervals:
1. Spring-summer: when it is warm and rarely rains (April, May, June, July, August, September, October)
The average daytime air temperature during this period is over 25 shuns Celsius.
During this time there are less than 10 rainy days in a month. In July there are usually 0, and in September there can even be 10. It should be noted that rainy days are not days when it rains all day. Most often rainfall occurs for a short part of the day, and the remainder of the day remains serene. These types of rainfall practically do not disturb sightseeing, and are often quite pleasant.
2. Autumn-winter: when it is cooler and it rains slightly more often (January, February, March, November, December)
The average daytime air temperature during this period is 14 shun Celsius.
As you can see, it gets much cooler at this time and there are more rainy days and more rainfall. There are usually more than 10 rainy days in a month (maximum 14 days). Again, however, it should be noted that these are not very intense rainfall. In the wettest month (November), an average of 84 mm of water drops then. For comparison, I will add that every year in Poland, in July, an average of 100 mm of water drops, which is a quarter more than in the rainiest month - November - in Rome.
In sum: if you are going to visit, walk, walk and not lie on the beach, this part of the year will be a good choice. Comfortable temperature for this type of activity and no wild crowds, and for this definitely lower prices in hotels, bars and pubs you will appreciate faster than you think! At that time, airline tickets and car rental are also definitely cheaper. This time has really many advantages.
WARNING!
Besides the weather, you need one more thing in Rome: a good sightseeing plan. Probably the best itinerary for visiting Rome can be found in the entry: Rome for beginners - sightseeing, attractions, map, accommodation. A lot of concrete, gathered into one juicy entry, devoid of unimportant clogs!
The worst and best date of departure
Definitely a bad choice is a trip to Rome in August. This is a real accumulation of adverse circumstances. It is terribly hot and there is a huge crowd.
In Italy, August is the month when most workplaces are closed and employees have compulsory leave. The piston is literally everywhere, prices soar into space. It's hard to find a place to spend the night, eat or even drink something quietly. The impression is deepened by the fact that many Romans go on holiday in August, so some of the facilities are closed. Drama. I strongly advise against.
However, if you decide to go to Rome during the high season, book your hotel at least 5 one month in advance. Booking in advance can be a problem because of the small selection of available places and high prices.
The best dates to visit Rome are several. Definitely The best conditions for sightseeing and recreation are: April, May, June, September and October. The choice of a convenient date is therefore wide. Just choose the month in which the temperature is most comfortable for you and on your way!
If you are planning a holiday in the form of active sightseeing, it is definitely worth considering the autumn and winter months.
