Important note: The viewpoint is located on a natural, unprotected cliff. There are no guardrails.
Keep your distance from the edge: limestone rocks can be brittle, especially after rain.
Wind: the cliffs of Malta are often very windy; keep an eye on your belongings and watch out for children.
Footwear: Avoid flip-flops. Due to the sharp and uneven rocks, sports shoes or hiking boots are recommended.
Tips for photographers
Golden hour: The viewpoint faces west, making it one of the best sunset spots in Malta. The sun descends directly into the sea, beautifully illuminating the village.
Instruments: A wide-angle lens (16-24mm) will perfectly capture the vastness of the bay, while a 35-50mm focal length will allow you to zoom in on the details of the village without distortion.
Drony: Always check current no-fly zones (NFZ) before flying. This area may be subject to restrictions due to its proximity to air corridors.

Popeye Village – the movie village

Anchor Bay, on the northwestern tip of Malta, holds one of the most unusual relics of Hollywood's golden age. While most movie sets end up as a pile of rubble after the final film, Popeye Village has survived intact for over four decades. It all began in June 1979, when construction crews from Canada and Italy brought hundreds of logs to the island to create the fictional town of Sweethaven for the musical "Popeye." This was no ordinary model; 19 authentic buildings were constructed, using eight tons of nails and two thousand gallons of paint. Interestingly, to give the village a look straight out of Elzie Segar's 30s comics, every piece of wood was specially aged and bleached to mimic years of exposure to sea salt and sun.
The architecture and unique style of a fairy-tale village
The settlement's architecture is a textbook example of the controlled chaos that cinematography calls "visual setting." The houses are deliberately devoid of right angles. Walls lean away from the perpendicular, roofs look as if they might slide into the turquoise waters of the bay, and brightly colored facades contrast with the stark limestone cliffs. Walking along the narrow jetties, one can almost feel the physical presence of Robert Altman's film crew. The building interiors are still filled with original props: from Olive Oyl's kitchen, lined with enameled vessels, to the dentist's office, which resembles a craft workshop rather than a medical facility. The construction of the breakwater is noteworthy. It was built specifically for the production to protect the set from the powerful Mediterranean waves, ultimately saving the village from destruction during later storms.
Robin Williams and the Film Legacy of Sweethaven
The history of this location is also a tale of a significant production risk for Paramount and Disney. The production of "Popeye" was a massive undertaking that was meant to redefine the musical adventure genre. It was here, within the crooked walls of Sweethaven, that Robin Williams made his big-screen debut, imbuing the spinach-eating sailor with an extraordinary, almost inhuman energy. The actor spent seven months in Malta, often improvising on set, which drove the producers crazy but ultimately gave the film its unique character. Today, instead of extras, animators are here, and visitors can participate in the authentic filming process of short scenes, experiencing firsthand the magic of old cinema. Sweethaven demonstrates the thin line between fiction and reality. A place that never existed on a map has become one of Malta's most recognizable landmarks.
Popeye Village Trivia
Timber Expedition : Because Malta is almost entirely deforested, all the timber used to build the village was imported by ship from the Netherlands and Canada, a logistical feat for the time.
Fire and Water : Although the village looks old, some of the buildings had to be reconstructed after a fire in the mid-80s. Paradoxically, the fire protection systems installed after that incident are among the most modern on the island.
Concrete Foundation : To support the structures on the cliff edge, vast quantities of concrete were poured beneath the water's surface, creating artificial foundations that are still studied by engineers today as examples of durability in the aggressive marine environment.
Hatred of Spinach : Robin Williams privately hated the taste of canned spinach. During scenes where he had to eat it, the crew repeatedly tried to hide other delicacies in the cans so the actor wouldn't have to fight his gag reflex.

Access and Logistics : You can reach the village directly from Mellieha by bus number 101. If you're driving, parking is free, but it fills up before 11:00.
Clothing and Safety : The terrain is steep, and the wooden planks can be slippery from the sea breeze. Sturdy shoes are better than sandals. In summer, be sure to bring a hat. There is very little natural shade in the village.
Photography : The best shot of the entire panorama you see on social media is from a free viewpoint on the cliff across the bay. The best light for photos is just before sunset.
