Beach and Bay of St. Thomas – the prettiest beach in Malta? Map, access, practical information

White Cliff and St. Thomas under the cliff

The prettiest beach in Malta

Is there such a thing as the prettiest beach? Probably not, because everyone expects something different from the beach. I am a good example of this myself. Reading and gathering information before going to Malta, I read the rankings and lists of Maltese beaches (by the way, most of the rankings recommend the same thing), and in practice I liked the beaches that were not in any of the rankings the most. So I decided to describe selected beaches, because there are definitely more people looking for something different than what can be found in typical rankings.

What guides me when choosing recommended beaches?

There is one simple criterion: I just have to like it. I don't expect a beach to have sand, sunbed rentals or a beach bar. I expect that it will create such a beautiful scenery that I will want to spend some time on it, regardless of the lack of the above-mentioned comforts. Such a beach is definitely St..Thomas beach

Characteristics of the beach and bathing area of St. Thomas

My proposed St. Thomas looks fabulous. It is located at the base of a high, white cliff, which together with the coastal, shallow water creates an amazing scenery. From above, from the cliff, it looks really great. However, you should not approach close to the edge of the cliff, even though the views are tempting, because the white, chalky ground is very soft, unstable and under the influence of a person's weight it can break off and collapse. The threat is best seen from below, after going down to the beach. Look up and see how deep the cliff walls are washed away. Standing close to its shore, you really only have a dozen-centimeter layer of earth under your feet, which is deeply undermined, which you can't see from above. So stay at least a meter from the edge of the cliff.
The beach is accessed via a sloping descent with no steps. There are, however, metal railings that significantly help in overcoming the slopes.

Don't get too close to the edge of the cliff

The beach is located close to the buildings on the outskirts of Marsaskala. Its approximate location on the map of Malta can be found in the picture below.

Location of St. Thomas on the map of Malta

Despite the fact that the buildings of the town of Marsaskala are located not far from the beach, you are unlikely to meet crowds of people on the beach. This is due to the fact that the neighboring buildings do not have a tourist and hotel character. These are mainly houses of local residents who have already enjoyed the beach and do not hang out on it all the time. The second important reason is probably the fact that almost no one recommends this beach on the internet ... because they would have to find it first.
The beach itself is rocky and if you want to spend more time on it, it is best to come here with your own deckchair or something soft to support your back (blanket, foam pad, thick towel).
A few steps from the beach there is enough space to park your car (on the street) and there are small local grocery stores (drinks, basic food, etc.) about 100m away.

View from the cliff to the beaches of St. Thomas, Malta

More or less 300 meters from St. Thomas is another beach (this time sandy) with a large guarded bathing beach, sanitary infrastructure and a very entertaining bar. It is called exactly the same, i.e. St. Thomas, because in fact, together with the beach under the cliff, it constitutes one coastal complex (they form one bay). For the sake of distinction, the sandy beach with a bar will be referred to as the St. Thomas.
At the swimming pool of St. Thomas usually stays quite a lot of people. Due to the amenities it offers, it attracts definitely more people, including families with children. Inevitably, there is a typical beach noise generated by people here.

Hotels and accommodation near St. Thomas

There are few accommodations in the immediate vicinity of the beach. It seems to me the most interesting Sensi Hotel and it is worth starting your search there (by simply clicking on the link to the hotel). In addition to the offer of the Sensi hotel, you will be shown offers of other nearby and similar accommodation. It is also worth paying attention to the other two suggestions. They are located in Marsaskala, from which to the beach of St. Thomas can be reached on foot or a few stops (3 - 4) by bus.
The offers I have chosen are quite attractive and comfortable, and at the same time have moderate prices for the proposed standard.
