Warm destinations, sun and ideas for a winter vacation

December in Poland is a time of short days, thick jackets, and a desperate search for holiday spirit in Christmas lights. But some people choose sand over snow. After all, nothing improves one's mood like the prospect of spending the holidays in the warm sun under palm trees instead of by the radiator.

If you're dreaming of escaping the winter gloom, December is the perfect time to plan a warm vacation. There are places in the world where the weather is at its best then: not too hot, not too crowded, and with great airfare. Just a few hours of flight is enough to trade the frost for sunshine, and the Christmas tree for a sunset over the ocean.

In this guide, I've gathered popular destinations that are easy to reach on your own or with a travel agency, and where the weather in December is perfect for sightseeing or blissful laziness. From sunny Canary Islands, by the charming Madeira and warm Cyprus, to more exotic propositions like Tajlandia, Zanzibar or DominikanaWhether you prefer an active city break, lounging on the beach with a drink in hand, or a tropical adventure, you'll find something for yourself here.

Let's begin our journey through the December sun!

Some practical improvements

For many of the courses proposed below, there are free, complete travel guides with attraction mapsWherever possible, I'll include direct links to guides that can help you quickly plan your trip.

In the course descriptions you will find links to hotelsDon't treat them as a specific guide to the hotels I recommend. Treat them as a good starting point for further research. The links I've included utilize the search engine's mechanism, which, alongside a specific hotel, always offers other, similar options, often at more attractive prices. Additionally, the links contain filters I've created. They prevent the display of offers that could unnecessarily clutter the search results and narrow the search to the section you're interested in. This means you don't have to enter this information manually each time. I recommend using these links, as they simplify your search and save time.

Many of the directions are ready safe car rental guidesDriving is my preferred way to explore, especially on the islands. It offers the most freedom and options. If you're planning to rent a car, be sure to check out my guide. It will likely save you a lot of time and explain the entire process in a simple way, so you can avoid mistakes and additional costs. You'll find links to the guides in the descriptions of specific destinations.

Canary Islands - sun in the middle of winter

Masca, Tenerife

When the days in Poland are shorter than an episode of your average TV series, the Canary Islands greet you with blue skies, the scent of the ocean, and a climate that could easily be called eternal spring. The archipelago consists of seven main islands. Each one is different, each one stunning. Tenerife with the majestic Teide volcano, Lanzarote with its Mars-like landscapes, Gran Canaria with its canyons and verdant valleys, and Fuerteventura with its endless beaches and turquoise waters… in December, they're like a cure for the winter blues.

The Canary Islands are a destination that doesn't require special preparations or exotic visas. All you need is a ticket and a sun hat, and within a few hours of flying, you'll be transported to a world where daylight has meaning again. For Europeans, it's the easiest way to experience the tropics without a passport or jet lag.

Cheap flights

Below, you'll find a tool I created that looks like a regular search engine, but is actually really fast and clever. It allows you to instantly check flight prices to your destination.
One click on the "OK" button without entering anything, you can check the current prices of airline tickets from all airports in the country (Poland is entered by default). The form works in real time and immediately generates current call prices! If you want to check connections from another country (or city), simply enter its name in the box. Later (if the list proves interesting), you can modify the search parameters on the landing page (starting city, dates, currency, language, etc.). The search engine works on all devices (phone, computer, tablet) and automatically adjusts functionality to the device type and screen size.

The landing page is probably the world's largest airline ticket comparison and search engine: Skyscanner
The website works in 24 languages and if it opens in a language other than your preferred one, simply switch it (in the menu or the globe icon in the upper right corner).

Cyprus - a warm Mediterranean winter

Rock formations near Ayia Napa, Cyprus

Cyprus is the perfect escape for those looking to "turn off winter mode" without flying to the ends of the earth. The island combines three things you usually can't have together: mild weather, rich history (from ancient temples to the Crusades), and easy logistics. In December, along the coast, you'll often find pleasant, sunny days around 18-20°C, and the tourist crowds turn into a friendly murmur. A beach? Absolutely! At least for a long walk and a coffee with a view of the turquoise waters. Only the toughest of souls and Scandinavians try a dip in the sea.

Distances are short in Cyprus, so in a week you can make a great loop: Larnaca with its palm-lined promenade, Limassol with its new marina and pubs, Paphos with its UNESCO-listed mosaics, and along the way, the Troodos Mountains with their trails, vineyards, and—sometimes—snow. This is a destination that "sells itself": easy to get to, easy to rent a car, delicious cuisine (the meze is a marathon of delights), and prices in winter are more affordable than in summer.

Cheap flights

One click on the "OK" button without entering anything you can check the current prices of airline tickets from all airports in the countryThe form works in real time and instantly generates a summary of current call prices!
If you want to check connections to or from another country (or city), simply enter its name in the box.

Climate type and weather in December

A Mediterranean climate with mild winters. Daytime temperatures by the sea are typically 18-20°C, and nighttime temperatures are 10-12°C. It's cooler in the mountains, with possible precipitation and even snow in the highest parts of the Troodos Mountains. Rain occasionally appears, but the sun still shines.

What to see and do

Pafos: Kato Paphos Archaeological Park (mosaics!), Tombs of the Kings, rocky coves of Coral Bay.

Larnaka: Finikoudes promenade, salt lake with flamingos (December and January are their time), Church of St. Lazarus.

Limassol: a castle, a modern marina, a trip to the vineyards near Omodos.

Troodos: UNESCO monasteries and churches (e.g. Agios Nikolaos tis Stegis), trekking, views "like from the Alps, only with olives".

Akamas Peninsula (from Paphos): Baths of Aphrodite, coastal walks, Blue Lagoon (no crowds in winter).

Precipitation: approx. 60-80 mm / month

This southernmost region of Portugal is renowned for its picturesque cliffs, golden beaches, and whitewashed towns where life unfolds between the café and the ocean. If December is a December dream of a place where you swap your jacket for light clothing and every walk ends with a "wow" photo, Malta is the perfect choice. Türkiye – Riviera (Antalya, Side, Fethiye, Marmaris, Bodrum)

Houses carved into the rock,
Cappadocia, Türkiye

December in Turkey is a recipe for a "mild winter with a touch of history." Instead of summer fever, you get empty beaches, lower prices, and very convenient sightseeing. Ancient cities (Perge, Aspendos, Side) can be admired without crowds, with only the sound of the river in the canyons, and old towns—like Kaleiçi in Antalya—smelling of coffee and spices. Daytime temperatures on the coast can reach 17-19°C, perfect for walks, trekking, and city breaks. The sea? More for walruses. Around 19-20°C, but the promenades and viewpoints appeal to everyone.
The region is vast, so it's worth choosing a base for your trip: Antalya and Side for the "golden triangle" of ruins and waterfalls, Fethiye and Oludeniz for the Lycian Way trails and turquoise bays, and Marmaris and Bodrum for bay and sailing experiences. In winter, some resorts quiet down, but that's a plus for those who prefer to hear their own thoughts (and seagulls) over loud music.

Cheap flights

One click on the "OK" button without entering anything you can check the current prices of airline tickets from all airports in the countryThe form works in real time and instantly generates a summary of current call prices!

Side: the temple of Apollo by the sea, the ancient agora, the Roman theater.
Fethiye and Oludeniz: viewpoint over the Blue Lagoon, Butterfly Valley, parts of the Lycian Way.
Kas–Kekova: ruins of a sunken city (cruises – weather dependent), picturesque cliffs.
Marmaris i Bodrum: Teutonic castles, marinas, bays for short cruises; further north – Ephesus (better as a separate trip).
Pamukkale (from Antalya or Fethiye as a longer trip): travertine terraces + Hierapolis.

Limestone hillside deposits in Pamukkale, Türkiye
Advantages (it makes it easier to travel alone)

Good flight connections to Antalya (AYT); the most sensible base in winter.
No visa required for Polish citizens for tourist stays up to 90 days (passport required).
Very wide range of accommodation and competitive prices in the off-season.
Tasty, accessible cuisine and easy local logistics (buses, dolmus – a type of minibus, car rental).

Challenges or limitations

More rain than in summer; some days may be cloudy.

Long journeys between points (the region is vast).
The mountains can be cold and slippery – appropriate shoes and a jacket are essential.

Detailed weather data for December

Precipitation: 150-220 mm / month (Antalya is more rainy in winter)
Rainy days: 9-12

Thailand (southern coast and islands) – dry season, warm sea, fairy-tale bays

Phuket area in Thailand

If you need a "factory reset" in winter, southern Thailand will do it in a day. December means dry season here, and on the Andaman Sea side (Phuket, Krabi, Koh Lanta, Koh Phi Phi) blue skies, warm, calmer seas, and jungles in shades that even Photoshop would be proud of. Bays surrounded by limestone cliffs look like the set of an adventure movie, and you're the star: a morning long-tail boat cruise, an afternoon snorkeling, and an evening pad Thai with lime juice that lifts your spirits faster than memes.
On the Gulf of Thailand side (Koh Samui/Koh Phangan/Koh Tao), December is usually the late end of the wet season. It can be sunny, but there are still a few showers; however, temperatures are pleasant and there's less dust in the air.
In practice: if you want to spend your time statistically and enjoy consistent sunshine, then aim for the Andaman Islands. If you prefer a "tropical, but with the chance of a rainy siesta" climate, choose the Gulf.
Thailand's biggest advantage? The ease of travel: excellent accommodations from bungalows to boutique hotels, delicious and affordable street food, efficient transportation, a smile, and a relaxed atmosphere. A December vacation here turns into a series of daily "wows" that threaten to bring back a thousand photos of limestone cliffs (and none of them will be wearing a winter jacket).

Tropical monsoon climate.
Andaman (Phuket, Krabi, Lanta): dry season; daytime 29-32°C, nighttime 24-26°C, low rainfall, comfortable humidity; sea 28-29°C.
Bay (Samui, Phangan, Tao): temporarily; during the day 28-31°C, possible showers, sea 27-29°C.

What to see and do

Krabi i Railay: lagoons, viewpoints, climbing and kayaking between the rocks.
Koh Lanta: quieter beaches, snorkeling on Koh Rok and Koh Haa.
Phuket: base for trips to the Phi Phi and Similan Islands (divers' paradise).
Koh Phi Phi: postcard-perfect bays (arrive early to avoid the crowds).
Zatoka: Koh Tao (diving), Koh Phangan (beaches and trekking), Koh Samui (waterfalls, island tour).

Advantages (it makes it easier to travel alone)

Very extensive infrastructure: ferries, minivans, domestic flights.
A huge selection of accommodation and local tours on the go.
Street food – cheap, fresh, delicious; vegetarian options readily available.
Weather on the Andaman side in December: steadily sunny.

Challenges or limitations

Long flight time and usually a transfer.
In popular places, prices can skyrocket during the season.
On the roads, the combination of scooter + inexperience = a bad idea (the statistics don't lie). Be careful.

Detailed weather data for December

Day: 29-32°C
Night: 24-26°C
Precipitation: Andaman ~50-100 mm / month; the Gulf sometimes receives more, but only fleetingly
Sunny days: 22-26 (Andaman)
Water temperature: 28-29°C

Logistics tips

Flights from Poland: most often with 1 transfer (Istanbul, Doha, Dubai, Frankfurt). Sometimes seasonal flights to Bangkok.

Getting to the islands: domestic flight + bus/ferry (Phuket ↔ Krabi ↔ Lanta/Phi Phi; Surat Thani ↔ Samui/Phangan/Tao).

Visas and formalities: Polish citizens usually do not require a visa for short tourist stays (approx. 30 days); always check current rules before departure. Passport required.

Health and vaccinations: none mandatory; recommended: hepatitis A, tetanus/diphtheria, typhoid fever. Mosquito repellent, UV filter, hydration. Drink bottled water.

What to avoid and what to watch out for

Monsoon "surprises" in the Gulf. Be flexible in your planning.
The sun generates tropical UV. Use sunscreen, a hat, and take breaks in the shade.
Scooters without experience and a helmet? Forget it! Take a tuk-tuk or a car with a driver.
Mass tours to Phi Phi and Similan Islands – choose smaller boats, depart early or late afternoon.

Zanzibar / Kenya (Equatorial Coast) – Spices, lagoons and a warm sea in the middle of winter

Beach in Zanzibar

If your internal solar panel is already glowing red, Zanzibar and the Kenyan coast (Diani, Mombasa, Watamu, Lamu) will give it a quick top-up. December here marks the beginning of the hot, dry season: the sky turns intensely blue, and the Indian Ocean takes on the color of a graphics program. Zanzibar enchants with its blend of Arabic, Swahili, and African cultures, redolent with cloves and cinnamon. Stone Town looks like a living UNESCO postcard: narrow alleyways, brass-studded wooden doors, and a spice market selling everything from vanilla to cardamom.
Across the water, the Kenyan coast offers a similar "beach paradise," but with a different energy: Diani offers lazy luxury with palm trees leaning like a commercial, Watamu and Malindi offer marine reserves with reefs at your fingertips, and Lamu is a fairytale Swahili town without cars, but with donkeys (seriously) and architecture that steals your heart. The region's big bonus? A safari package: from the Kenyan coast, you can hop off to Tsavo or Amboseli, and from Zanzibar, to Nyerere (Selous) or Saadani, where the savanna flows... straight into the ocean.

Climate type and weather in December

The climate is tropical monsoon. December usually marks the end of the "short rains" and the beginning of the dry season: hot and humid, but with a large number of sunny days. The ocean is calmer, and underwater visibility is good for diving.

What to see and do

Zanzibar:
Stone Town (UNESCO), spice market, sunsets with dhow.
Jozani Forest (red colobus), Prison Island (giant tortoises).
Mnemba Atoll and Nakupenda – snorkel, white sand, water like turquoise in the catalogue.
Safari Blue – a full-day cruise through the lagoons.

Kenya - coast:
Diani Beach – wide, white beaches; excursion to Wasini and Kisite-Mpunguti Marine Park (dolphins, reef).
Watamu/Marine Park – snorkel from glass-bottom boats.
Lamu – an old Swahili town, atmospheric houses and… no cars.
Safari (1-3 day options): Tsavo East/West, Amboseli (Kenya) or Nyerere/Saadani (Tanzania).

Practical tips

Visas and formalities:
Tanzania and Zanzibar: usually online e-visa (approx. USD 50) – check current rules.
Kenya: eTA (Electronic Travel Authorization) instead of e-visa; apply online before arrival.
Passport: minimum validity of 6 months from entry.

Health and vaccinations:
None required for arrivals from Europe (yellow fever required for transfer after stay in risk countries).

Recommended: hepatitis A, typhoid fever, tetanus/diphtheria; antimalarial prophylaxis (especially on the Kenyan coast; in Zanzibar the risk is lower, but mosquito repellents are mandatory).

Drink bottled water, avoid drinks with ice (frozen tap water). Be careful with street food (choose busy places).

What to avoid and what to watch out for

Strong sun and UV – 50+ cream, hat, breaks in the shade.
Tides, currents and sea urchins – water shoes + ask locals about conditions.
Beach merchants (touts) – end conversations politely, assertively, without strings attached.
Respect for local culture (Muslim places): appropriate dress in towns.

Caribbean (Dominican Republic, Cuba, Jamaica) – December on vitamin D

A characteristic palm tree in the Dominican Republic

The Caribbean is a classic winter escape: December sees the beginning of the dry season, humidity drops to breathable levels, and the sea is warmer than a post-running shower. The Dominican Republic tempts with easy logistics (plenty of flights and charters), long beaches, and the turquoise lagoon of Saona Island. Cuba adds a touch of atmosphere: Havana, live music, vintage cars, and towns like Trinidad that look as if someone had frozen the golden hour there. Jamaica is a mix of reggae, the Blue Mountains, Dunn's River Falls, and the beaches of Negril, where the sunset has its own fan club.
December is spot-on weather-wise: sunny, warm, and little rain. Depending on your travel style, you can choose: the Dominican Republic (easiest and most beachy), Cuba (most cultural), or Jamaica (most relaxed).

Hi, what do you think about the Azores and Mallorca in December/January?

      Mallorca
I was in Mallorca during this period. There are long periods of very strong winds. The weather is suitable for sightseeing, but not for a beach holiday.
In terms of specifics, Mallorca in December and January is mild for winter, but not particularly warm: daytime temperatures typically hover around 15-17°C, with cool mornings and evenings (around 5-8°C), and the wind can add a "cooling effect," especially when the Tramontana blows in from the north. The days are short: in December, the sun is briefly on the solstice, while in January, it gets noticeably brighter from week to week. Rain? It comes in bursts: a few humid days interspersed with long, sunny "windows." The sea at this time is around 17→15°C in December and 15→14°C in January, so swimming is probably for walruses.
December is a mix of pleasant, sunny days, perfect for sightseeing, and walks with occasional bouts of wind and rain. It can be colder in the Serra de Tramuntana mountains, with even a touch of snow (a rarity on the coast). January is the coldest of the year, but the difference from December is small: you can still sit in the sun on a café terrace (in a jacket rather than flip-flops).

      Azores
At the turn of December and January, a mild, oceanic winter prevails here: daytime temperatures typically hover around 16–17°C, while nights hover around 11–13°C. The sky can be unpredictable: about 60% of days are cloudy, but sunny spells can appear between the clouds.
This is one of the wettest times of the year. December is statistically the rainiest, and January is typical for "series" of rainfall (in Ponta Delgada, about 135 mm and ~21 days with rain). The chance of a "wet day" decreases slightly only towards the end of January. Umbrella? Yes, although sometimes a hooded jacket is better, as the wind can quickly transform an umbrella into a modern sculpture.
Day length. Around the winter solstice (December 21st) there are ~9 hours 33 minutes of light, increasing to ~10 hours 18 minutes by the end of January.
The water temperature in winter is ~16–17°C: suitable for surfing in a wetsuit, but not for regular swimming.
It's colder and windier in the mountains and on the cliffs than on the coast; mud is a regular part of the itinerary (shoes with treads + spare socks).
